SUMMARY:Development Challenges of Pune: What Needs to Happen to Ensure Economically Vibrant, Livable, People Centric, Inclusive and Climate Ready City by 2050?
DESCRIPTION:This webinar on Pune city  is a part of the 4 event webinar series on the Cities of Maharashtra. This webinar is an effort to create an understanding and public awareness on the daunting urban challenge India is facing. Are we ready to absorb 300 million more people in our cities in 25 more years? India’s urban population by 2050 is estimated at 870 million. Do we have the resources and organizational capacity to invest dollars 680 billion in a span of 15 years, to create the much-needed urban infrastructure? Are we prepared for the consequences of climate change which will affect cities more because of their nature? Are our planning, governance, regulatory systems in place to ensure better cities and good living for their citizens? It is not only the bigger, overall picture. How is Nagpur or Pune or Aurangabad or Nashik prepared? What are Pune’s strengths and weaknesses in ensuring good economic growth, jobs for the youth, livelihood for its informal businesses and services, infrastructure for its growing population and healthy, productive and good living for all its people? What needs to change and happen to substantially improve conditions of living and overall environment for a better Pune?\n\n Not many know about challenges our cities face. There are no platforms to discuss and articulate issues. Some planning and discussion do happen in the government department offices, municipal corporation, and even private business houses. However, common citizens, ordinary people, are hardly a part of it. This webinar series is an effort to take the development debate to the citizens. Thereby it is a citizen’s platform.\n\nThe webinar will feature knowledgeable and experienced individuals and organizations who will share their perspectives on the development challenges facing Pune city. These include issues related to governance, planning, environment, financing, physical and social infrastructure, institutions, employment, leadership, livelihoods, poverty, investment, social dynamics, the city’s unique character, and emerging opportunities. The panel comprises a diverse mix of experts from fields such as politics, physical, social, and financial planning, business, industry, academia, media, technology, labor, and social work.\n
