SUMMARY:Cities of Gujarat – Saving Water: What is at stake and how could it be done for everybody’s benefit?
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will be on responsible use and conservation of water, sharing ideas, perspectives, issues and solutions on the water matter. The key presentation of the webinar is a case study of a residential society in Ahmedabad, called Sumeya Apartments, where a group of members decided to take action. Water use in the society was rising, which was evident by the increased number of times water was being pumped through the borewell. In other seasons, members observed water getting wasted due to individual carelessness. The elected chairperson, secretary and members installed water meters in every home. People resisted at first. For around one and a half years, the society didn’t charge but took regular readings and recorded the data. Even without billing in this period, there was a psychological shift in water usage. They became more cautious and started using water judiciously. When metered billing began, water use plummeted, cutting the borewell electricity bill from rupees 60,000 to rupees 25,000 monthly, saving rupees 4.5 lakh annually. In three years the metres paid for themselves.\nThere is much evidence telling us how cities are moving fast to water scarcity and even water crisis. This story tells us why it is not inevitable. It is do-able, relatively easy, and economically viable.\n
